The China Entrepreneurs Organization (CEO) invited Prof. Wong Kam-fai, Member of the 13th & 14th National Committee of the CPPCC and Associate Dean (External Affairs) of the Faculty of Engineering, CUHK to discuss improving the usage habits of local tech products and connecting with the Greater Bay Area development on August 19, 2024. Dr Gary Cheng, chairman of the CEO extended a warm welcome.
Prof. Wong pointed out that Hong Kong’s widespread adoption of foreign tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, and Apple has hindered the development of local IT talent in the Greater Bay Area. He noted that Hong Kong schools also primarily use these foreign technologies, leaving little room for alternative choices.
Prof. Wong suggested that schools could use Google while also introducing Chinese software like Alibaba Cloud, allowing students to connect with the world while staying aligned with national conditions. With the nation’s support for Hong Kong to become an international innovation and technology center, driving the development of the Greater Bay Area, and fostering closer exchange and integration between Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau in tech innovation, we should seize this golden opportunity to integrate into national development. Prof. Wong emphasized the importance of equipping students well so that they can thrive in the Greater Bay Area. He stressed that many schools have neglected the regional characteristics of software systems, and that students who only learn a single system will be limited in their development in the Greater Bay Area. Therefore, schools should use diverse software systems.
Prof. Wong also mentioned the “Hong Kong Climate Action Plan 2050”, stating that Hong Kong’s limited land and resources for developing renewable energy make it essential to collaborate with the Greater Bay Area to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. He suggested that Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area should work together to develop renewable energy, which would not only benefit local enterprises but also drive local economic growth. Chairman Dr Gary Cheng and Prof. Stephen Chow expressed their agreement, emphasizing that as an international metropolis with the backing of the motherland, Hong Kong should make the most of this advantage to achieve mutual benefits.
