On 21st February 2024, the Chinese Entrepreneurs Organization cordially invited Mr. James Li, Vice President of Public Affairs at Tencent Group, to share his valuable insights and experiences on Tencent’s commendable efforts in promoting digital philanthropy.
During this distinguished occasion, Mr. James Li illuminated Tencent’s vision and mission, which revolved around placing users at the core and utilizing technology for the greater good. Tencent has established a strategic framework of “sustainable social value” to actively support the advancement of society.
Chairman Dr Gary Cheng and esteemed colleagues engaged with Mr. Li to explore the ways in which technology can empower philanthropic development. Mr. Li highlighted Tencent Foundation’s unwavering commitment to promoting philanthropy for all, leveraging technology to reduce barriers to citizen participation and ensuring that everyone could enjoy and engage in philanthropic activities.
In mainland China, Tencent’s WeChat platform introduced initiatives such as “Donate One Yuan per Person” and behavior-based philanthropic activities like “Donate Steps” and “Donate Conference Time.” These endeavors aimed to foster the perception that philanthropy could become an integral part of daily life. Expanding this innovative model to Hong Kong, Tencent Foundation launched the “Do One Good Deed a Day” internet philanthropy project over the past two years, benefiting individuals in need and amplifying the impact of even the smallest acts of kindness.
In Tencent’s latest release, the 2023 Social Value Annual Report, Tencent CEO Pony Ma outlined three key priorities in driving social value innovation. Firstly, Tencent endeavored to undertake philanthropic work that aligned with its unique capabilities. Secondly, the company sought to embark on unprecedented initiatives that evoked excitement and inspired the public. Lastly, Tencent aimed to transcend the boundaries of the internet industry by broadening perspectives and forging connections with various fields through its technological prowess.
Additionally, Mr. James Li introduced Tencent’s philanthropic brand and projects, including initiatives such as the 99 Giving Days and Little Safflower. These endeavors exemplified how Tencent employed technology to empower philanthropy, utilizing internet tools and technologies as the foundation for fostering borderless development in the realm of public welfare.
